On October 25, renowned Argentine pianist Horacio Lavandera will offer an unmissable concert at the Teatro Coliseo in Buenos Aires. The show will begin with Ludwig van Beethoven’s tribute to the kings of England through variations on two of his most famous melodies, transformed into hymns: “God Save the King” and “Rule Britannia.”

The 33 Diabelli Variations, Op. 120 in C major, were composed between 1819 and 1823 based on a waltz by the Austrian composer and music publisher Anton Diabelli. It was Diabelli who, in 1819, commissioned variations from Vienna’s leading composers for a charity album to help the widows and orphans of the Napoleonic Wars.

The second part of this concert will take us through the original piano roll versions recorded by Gustav Mahler himself of his most iconic songs and passages from his symphonies, including the “Adagietto,” immortalized in Luchino Visco’s film Death in Venice.
