Horacio Lavandera releases his live album: Beethoven’s 33 Variations on a Diabelli Waltz
The “33 Variations on a Diabelli Waltz, Op. 120 in C Major” were composed by Ludwig van Beethoven between 1819 and 1823. Musicologist Sir Donald Tovey considered them “the greatest set of variations ever written.” In a recent and acclaimed article by journalist Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim in The New York Times, composer and musicologist Anthony K. Brandt, professor at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, argues that Beethoven’s “Diabelli Variations” offer an exceptionally rich case study in creativity and divergent thinking, connecting Beethovenian techniques to possibilities for development in Artificial Intelligence.
Argentine pianist Horacio Lavandera will release his version of this masterpiece on Friday, March 27th, as the first single from his new album, “Vivo en el Teatro Coliseo de Buenos Aires” (Live at the Coliseo Theater in Buenos Aires). This eclectic collection was recorded during his concert on October 25, 2025, and was produced by Celoria Productora. Very few live recordings of this work exist, given its immense technical and emotional complexity. The recording comes from the artist’s archives, and the mixing and mastering were done by Federico Elicetche.

Horacio Lavandera is a fifth-generation member of a family of distinguished professional musicians. Throughout his career, he has performed on some of the most important stages in the Americas, Europe, and Japan, both in his own recitals and as a soloist with renowned orchestras. He has performed in legendary venues such as the Herkulessaal (Munich), Berliner Philharmonie (Berlin), Radio France (Paris), Wigmore Hall (London), Jordan Hall (Boston), Carnegie Hall (New York), Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (Rome), Musikverein (Vienna), Hamarikyu Asahi Hall (Tokyo), Teatro Real (Madrid), and Teatro Colón (Buenos Aires), alongside prestigious orchestras such as the Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg, the Spanish Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra, the London Chamber Players, and the Orchestra of the Teatro Real, under the direction of Antonio Pappano, Benjamin Zander, Franz-Paul Decker, and others.
Awarded at the Umberto Micheli International Competition held at the Teatro Alla Scala in Milan at only 16 years old, he was also distinguished three times as “Best Instrumental Soloist” by the Association of Music Critics of Argentina, awarded by the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen in Germany and with the “Primer Palau” in Barcelona and has an award-winning and praised discography with three Gardel awards to his credit.
