República de Corrientes. Lavandera arrives at the Teatro Juan de Vera. “Sounds of the Eternal”. August 9th at 9:30 p.m
Renowned Argentine pianist Horacio Lavandera will perform on Saturday, August 9th at 9:30 pm at the Juan de Vera Official Theater, as part of a tour of the Litoral region. With a repertoire encompassing the great classics of world music and a moving connection with regional music, the show titled “Sounds of the Eternal” promises to be an unforgettable experience. Tickets are now available at weepas.ar.
Lavandera, one of Argentina’s leading piano experts, offers a musical journey that unites Beethoven, Mahler, The Beatles, and Cerati, culminating with a special tribute to chamamé, with pieces by Mario del Tránsito Cocomarola adapted for the piano. The closing performance will also feature a special guest: Gabriel Cocomarola, grandson of the legendary composer, will accompany him on stage with his bandoneon to perform a classic.
The show will begin with Ludwig van Beethoven’s monumental 33 Diabelli Variations, one of the pinnacle works of the piano repertoire, composed between 1819 and 1823 based on a waltz by the Austrian publisher Anton Diabelli. The work has been considered by musicologist Donald Tovey to be “the greatest set of variations ever written.”
In the second part, Lavandera will present original piano roll versions recorded by Gustav Mahler himself, including memorable passages from his symphonies and the famous Adagietto, popularized by the film Death in Venice. She will then tackle Beatles classics such as Imagine, Yesterday, and Eleanor Rigby, and continue with works by the unforgettable Gustavo Cerati, one of the great icons of Argentine rock.
The closing performance will be deeply moving, with a tribute to chamamé through a selection of pieces by Mario del Tránsito Cocomarola performed for piano. This is the result of Lavandera’s recent exploration of the genre following his 2024 tour of northeastern Argentina, produced by “Música Sin Etiquetas.”
A Career of International Renown
Horacio Lavandera began his training with Marta Freigido and Antonio de Raco—disciples of maestro Vicente Scaramuzza—and was awarded a scholarship in 2001 to the Chigiana Academy in Siena, thanks to the recommendation of Marta Argerich. There, he studied with Maurizio Pollini and later furthered his studies with Josep Colom in Madrid. He currently resides in Buenos Aires.
Winner of the Umberto Micheli International Piano Competition (Milan, 2001), Lavandera has performed in major venues around the world: La Scala in Milan, Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, and concert halls in cities such as Tokyo, Paris, Lucerne, Boston, and Barcelona. He was also the opening artist for the Cosquín Festival in 2023.
Passionate about contemporary music, he has worked with figures such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Mauricio Kagel, and Pierre Boulez. In his country, he was awarded Best Instrumental Soloist by the Music Critics Association in 2006 and 2008, and honored by the Konex Foundation.
Next Saturday, August 9, Lavandera will arrive at the emblematic Juan de Vera Theater to offer a unique recital, in which classical music, rock, and chamamé will come together in the hands of one of the most sensitive performers in the country.
