Holy Week: From Star Wars to Piazzolla with Horacio Lavandera and “Cinema at the Piano”

In an interview with “Pasen y Vean” on LU9 Mar del Plata, pianist Horacio Lavandera spoke about his upcoming show in the city, a treat for film lovers: on Friday, April 3rd at 8:30 pm at the Teatro Colón, he will fuse classical music and cinema, exploring everything from the world of Bach to Star Wars.

Pianist Horacio Lavandera will return to Mar del Plata on April 3rd to present “Cinema at the Piano,” a show that offers an original fusion of classical music and the cinematic universe. The concert will take place at the Teatro Colón and is part of a national tour that includes Rosario, Santa Rosa, General Pico, Buenos Aires, and Luján.

As the artist himself explained, this is a “very new” program in his repertoire, in which he seeks to integrate classical works with iconic film pieces, generating a dialogue between tradition and contemporary music.

A repertoire that crosses eras and styles

Lavandera detailed that one of the concert’s central pieces will be the performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations, a work he described as “magnificent” and one he had longed to perform for over 25 years.

In this regard, he noted that many of Bach’s pieces have had a strong presence in film, allowing him to connect them with more contemporary compositions, such as his Star Wars versions. Added to this are works by Frédéric Chopin, popularized in the film The Pianist, reinforcing the comprehensive concept of the performance.

The musician maintained that the idea is to create contrast: “One can enjoy a classical work much more if it is contrasted with something more contemporary, and vice versa,” he explained.

Piazzolla and Cinema: Another Key Aspect of the Program

The repertoire will also include pieces by Astor Piazzolla linked to film, a lesser-known aspect of his work. Among them, Lavandera chose “Oblivion,” composed for a film, and the suite “Punta del Este,” used as a leitmotif in the film 12 Monkeys.

The pianist emphasized that these compositions allow us to rediscover Piazzolla’s work from a different perspective and understand his international reach through cinema.

The Essential Classics

When asked about his influences, Lavandera mentioned Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin as fundamental pillars of classical music. He considered their works to possess a depth comparable to that of great masters in other artistic disciplines, such as Michelangelo or Leonardo da Vinci.

Regarding Bach, he highlighted the complexity and development of his compositions, the result of decades of work and a life marked by intense experiences, which are reflected in a body of work “that can be viewed from different angles and is always a marvel.”

Expectation for his return to Mar del Plata

The concert in Mar del Plata will be the third performance of this new program, following its premiere in Buenos Aires and a recent show in Mercedes, where it received very positive reviews.

Lavandera expressed his enthusiasm for reconnecting with the local audience and sharing a project that “fascinates” him, in a city with which he maintains a special connection.

Tickets are now on sale for this performance, which promises a unique musical journey, combining history, emotion, and cinema on a single stage. ARTICKETS
