Sounds of Eternal Life

The 33 Diabelli Variations, Op. 120 in C major, were composed between 1819 and 1823 based on a waltz by the Austrian composer and music publisher Anton Diabelli. It was Diabelli who, in 1819, commissioned variations from Vienna’s leading composers for a charity album to help widows and orphans of the Napoleonic Wars. British musicologist Sir Donald Tovey considered them “the greatest set of variations ever written.”

The second part of this concert will take us through the original piano roll versions recorded by Gustav Mahler himself of his most iconic songs and passages from his symphonies, including the “Adagietto,” immortalized in Luchino Visconti’s film Death in Venice.

These compositions will be combined with Horacio Lavandera’s versions of iconic songs by members of The Beatles, such as “Imagine,” “Yesterday,” and “Eleanor Rigby.” Finally, a selection of original versions by Gustavo Cerati, one of the greatest exponents of Argentine rock, will be presented.

Finally, the great Argentine classical pianist will pay a special tribute to chamamé, performing significant works by Mario del Tránsito Cocomarola, translated into his brilliant piano performance. The concert will conclude with him sharing the stage with the grandson of the great chamamé composer, Gabriel Cocomarola, playing the bandoneon to recreate a classic by his grandfather.

After his last tour of northeastern Argentina in August 2024, produced by “Música Sin Etiquetas,” Lavandera developed a strong connection with chamamé. So much so that this great classical pianist dedicated himself to studying and covering some classics of our music, which he will now present to the regional public for the first time.
